    Commonwealth Online Server

This release significantly improves Linux compatibility, server reliability, and configuration handling for the Commonwealth Online dedicated server.

    Linux compatibility and packaging

    • Added continuous integration testing for Ubuntu and Arch Linux environments.
    • Added safeguards for incorrect line endings and missing executable permissions.
    • Updated Linux startup to use a local Python virtual environment by default.
    • Split dependencies between the dedicated server and the optional Host GUI.
    • Improved support for headless servers and systemd deployments.
    • Added graceful shutdown handling for SIGTERM.
    • Improved socket and background thread cleanup during server shutdown.

    Runtime reliability

    • Added clearer error messages when the server cannot bind to the configured address or port.
    • Added stricter validation for server configuration values.
    • Added checks to ensure configuration and runtime state locations are writable.
    • Improved shutdown behaviour to reduce hanging sockets and lingering threads.
    • Added portability and runtime integration tests to prevent regressions.

    Configuration file handling

    • JSON file arguments are now reliably recognised as server configuration paths.
    • The serve command now supports an optional positional configuration path:
    python -m commonwealth_server serve commonwealth-server.json

    • Positional configuration paths behave the same as using --config:
    python -m commonwealth_server serve --config commonwealth-server.json

    • The server now reports an error when conflicting positional and --config paths are supplied.
    • Improved support for launching configuration files through file-manager Open with actions.
    • Updated start.sh and start.bat to explicitly parse configuration arguments.
    • Startup scripts now validate that configuration arguments include a value.
    • Startup scripts always forward configuration paths using --config, preventing accidental positional argument handling.

    Documentation

    • Updated Linux installation and deployment instructions.
    • Added documentation for virtual environment-based startup.
    • Added documentation for positional and --config configuration paths.
    • Expanded guidance for headless and systemd server deployments.

    Commonwealth Online Server 1.0

The first stable release of the Commonwealth Online dedicated server and the new Windows Host GUI.

Host a Commonwealth Online multiplayer session on your own computer, make it discoverable across your local network, and manage connected players through either the interactive server console or the native Windows Host application.

    What’s included

    Dedicated relay server

The relay server supports Python 3.9 and newer.

    • One-command startup using start.bat on Windows or start.sh on Linux and macOS
    • Configurable TCP bind address, port, server name, description, and player limit
    • LAN discovery, allowing clients to automatically find servers on the local network
    • Interactive commonwealth> administration prompt
    • List and monitor connected players
    • Kick, ban, and unban players by player ID or IP address
    • Change the world time and weather from the console
    • Localhost administration port for management from another terminal or the Host GUI
    • Automatic generation of commonwealth-server.json on first launch

    Windows Host GUI

The Commonwealth Online Host app provides a native Qt 6 interface for running and managing a server without using the command line.

    • Start and stop the server
    • Edit the server name, description, bind address, port, maximum players, and log level
    • View the active bind address, LAN IP, client count, uptime, and packet statistics
    • Monitor connected clients in real time
    • View server output through a resizable log panel
    • Keep the server running as a separate process if the Host GUI closes or crashes

    Requirements

    Relay server

    • Python 3.9 or newer

    Windows Host GUI

    • Windows 10 or newer
    • Qt 6.4 or newer
    • Visual Studio 2022
    • CMake 3.20 or newer

    Quick start

    Command-line server

Download the server folder and run:

    start.bat

    On Linux or macOS:

    ./start.sh

No compilation or build step is required.

    Windows Host GUI

Follow the instructions in SETUP.md, then run:

    check-setup.bat
    build.bat

The compiled application will be created at:

    build\bin\Release\CommonwealthOnlineHost.exe

    Connecting

    The default server address is:

    0.0.0.0:7777

To connect from the same computer, use:

    127.0.0.1:7777

Players on the same local network can connect using the LAN IP displayed when the server starts.

Hosting over the internet may require allowing the server through your firewall and forwarding the selected TCP port.

    Notes

    • Changes saved through the configuration file or Host GUI take effect the next time the server starts.
    • If port 7777 is already being used, run fix-port.bat or fix-port.sh, or select another port in commonwealth-server.json.
    • The server software does not include the Fallout 4 client mod.
